I’m Timo Kiander And This Is What Makes Me A High Performer

What do you get when you combine an online entrepreneur, a family man, and a marathon runner?

A productive superdad.

This is exactly what my next guest in the “Habits and Habitats of High Performers” interview series is. An avid blogger whose works can be seen in Lifehacker, Time Management Magazine, Forbes and all major online publications, an online entrepreneur, a productivity expert with a busy social media presence, a husband, a father… and he runs marathons in his spare time (yes, he does have spare time even with his ultra-busy lifestyle).

How does he do it all?

Let’s find out from Timo aka “Productive Superdad” himself:

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Timo Kiander, and I live in Finland. I’m a full-time blogger, a dad, and an athlete (runner).

I’m passionate about productivity, personal development, and healthy lifestyles.

What’s the first thing that you do when you wake up?

Walk to the kitchen and have a glass of water. Then, I head over to my home office and meditate for 20 minutes.

How does your typical day look like (start, end, type of activities)?

After waking up and meditating, I work a bit until the rest of the family wakes up. Then, we have breakfast and afterwards I work during the morning.

After I eat lunch with my family it’s time for a quick nap. I usually work 1.5 hours in the afternoon as well. After that it’s my turn to take care of our son (who is not in daycare yet).

In the evening I have a chance to exercise and this is mainly running, swimming, or cycling. After the evening routines and putting our son to bed, I stay up a while with my wife until it’s time to go to bed and get some sleep. This is around 11 or 11:30 PM.

Besides sleep, what activity takes the most out of your day/night?

I would say that there are three main activities: building my online business, exercising, and spending time with my family.

My main scope right now is building my online business and it takes anywhere between 4-6 hours per day.

Other activities are spending time with my family and exercising.

How many emails pass through your inbox every day?

I would say it’s between 20 and 30. Most of the e-mails are related to e-mail list subscriptions.

This is very manageable and I don’t have issues with e-mail overload right now.

How often do you think about your goals, review them, and take action on them?

I’m thinking about my goals every day.

I create my task list for the next day the night before – based on the goals I have.

Especially when I pick new projects, I want to reflect them against the goals I have and see if they take me (when completed) closer to my goals or not.

I also do a weekly planning, so that I know the right things to focus on.

What are the essential habits that you’ve formed to help you achieve your goals?

Having a task list, letting go of non-essentials, and knowing my vision.

I like to plan my days in advance, so that I know the things to focus on. Every now and then I might get distracted with a new shiny thing. In those cases it’s a matter of knowing the overall goal I’m going after and then reverting back to my original plan (and letting go of the shiny thing).

It’s important to know your direction, otherwise you tend to get off track very fast.

What apps/software/tools can’t you live without?

I’m not a productivity tool junkie, but here are the tools I mostly use:

  • Nozbe (task management application)
  • LastPass (storing my user IDs and passwords) – Note from Kosio: check out this post on how to set up LastPass and create super secure passwords.
  • SpeedDial2 (accessing most-visited websites quickly)
  • GDrive (I keep all my documents and media there).

What’s your workspace setup like (brownie points for including a picture)?

I just bought my first Mac ever (MacBook Pro 13” Retina). I’m using it with two 24” screens, Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard, and Apple Magic Mouse.

We moved to a new home last fall. Our home office is still unfinished and it’s going to be renovated during the spring.

What’s your best time-saving trick?

With just a little planning it’s possible to see all the small tasks that you can then do at once. The fact is that the more you take care of these small tasks, the less they haunt you later on.

How do you deal with failure and how do you pick yourself up if you are struggling?

It’s all about seeing the lesson in what has just happened. After some time has passed it’s easier to understand why this happened and what the actual lesson of it was.

I don’t consider failures as failure. Rather, they are feedback and guidance to do things differently the next time.

What motives you to do what you do?

Knowing exactly what my passion is and giving it 100%. When you have found your passion, it’s easy to give it all you got and try to go as far as you can get with it.

What’s in your RSS reader (what blogs do you follow)?

I got to tell you – I haven’t used RSS for years, although I want to get started again since it’s easier to see the interesting headlines (and articles) that I want to read. So get back to me with this question again later this year :)

If you invite me for a cup of tea what types of books would I find on your shelf at home (more brownie points for including a picture)?

You would mostly find some productivity and time management, personal development, health, web design, and business books.

And by the way, please excuse my messy bookshelf – my books are growing out of my shelf, but hopefully our new home office is bringing some order to this chaos.

If you could have dinner with any person (dead or alive) who would it be and what would you ask them?

I’d like to meet Tony Robbins and ask his opinion about living without limitations. Too often we are afraid of something and that’s why we are not taking action or we are thinking about what others think too much.

He could have a lot of wisdom about this and how to reach ones true potential.

Prepare from the day before and above all, find your passion and make sure what you do every day is always aligned with it.
