How do you start your day with a smile?

How do you start your day with so much mental energy, with so much inspiration and motivation that it just makes your entire day more productive?

Motivation and inspiration are a big part of productivity. When you’re happy and excited, when you’re pumped up,  your whole day is so much better.

Unfortunately, being happy and excited does not happen every single day on its own. Sometimes you wake up and the sun is shining, there are birds outside your window singing, and you’re happy. But other days, you wake up and you’re a little exhausted, or you didn’t sleep well and you’re in a bad mood. If that is your morning how can you pull yourself up? How can you tap into your motivation and inspiration almost on demand?

Your motivation is so important that you cannot just leave it to chance. You need to schedule it.

You can’t just hope that you’re going to wake up in a good mood. If it happens, great, but if it doesn’t you need to have tools at your disposal that you can use to bring your mood up. Here are the 3 no-nonsense techniques you can use to “wake up happy”:

how to wake up happy

1) 3 Things That You Are Grateful For

Write down every single morning three things that you’re grateful for.

When the alarm rings, get up, go to the bathroom, drink a glass of water, go through your morning routine and then sit down and think of three things that you’re grateful for. They can be big things like your family, your friends, the fact that you’re healthy, or they can be small things. You can be happy that outside it’s sunny for example, or that you woke up without an alarm.

It doesn’t matter how big or small the item are. Just think of three things that you’re grateful for right now. It automatically forces your brain to think about the positive things in your life, to think about stuff that you’re so happy, so excited about that it just brings your entire mood up and you cannot help but smile.

Take just a few minutes, first thing in the morning, as close to your waking up as possible, and think of three things that you’re grateful for.

At first it might be hard. You might be like, “wait, what am I grateful for?” But once you get into it, once you come up with one, once you do it a couple times, you’re going to figure it out, it’s going to become easy, and then you can tap into this gratefulness on demand. It takes just a few minutes, but it’s going to bring your mood up every single morning.

If you want to wake up happy, you need to wake up with gratitude.

Tip: to take up a notch, write down the 3 items that you are grateful for. This will make you process them much deeper and you’ll also have a record of them if you ever want to go back and time and review your notes. (It is quite fun, and enlightening, to go back a few months and see what you were grateful for and compare it to the your current version).

2) Send A “Thank You” Note

Who in your social circle deserves a heartfelt “thank you”?

Maybe you’re thankful for having such great parents. Write a thank-you note and send it to your parents.

Maybe you’re grateful for a favor a friend did for you a couple of days ago. Send them a thank-you note.

thank you note

Maybe you’re grateful for the doorman in your building, because every day you see him, he greets you with a big smile that makes you happy. Maybe you’re grateful for the barista at the nearest Starbucks who makes you coffee and gives it to you and says, “hey, have an amazing day,” and that lights you up every single morning. Send them a thank you note.

Think of the people in your life, and think of someone who deserves a thank-you note. And then write that note and send it to them. Imagine you send a thank-you note to a friend that says, “hey, I’m really grateful for your friendship all these years, and I’m especially thankful for that thing (insert the actual favor) you did the other day.” You just write it in an e-mail and blast it out. Imagine how they would feel if they opened their e-mail expecting to see a bunch of work-related emails, only to find an unexpected thank-you note from you. Imagine what that would do to them. Imagine what that would do to you if you do it every single day.

Just think of the people around you that deserve a thank-you note, write one up, and send it. Easy

Extra tip: while you can use Facebook, or email for the thank you note so you keep things efficient, if you really want to impress someone, send them an actual hand-written note through the snail mail. No one ever does that and people are used to receiving only bills and flyers in their mailbox so it will have an even greater effect.

3) Start Your Browser With Inspiration

Start your browser with inspiration. Set the homepage of the browser you use the most to be something that inspires you.

It can be a motivational video. Or your favorite quote. Or a picture. You know best what inspires you on a regular basis so put that as you homepage.

This way, when you go to work, you sit down, you fire up your browser because you want to check your e-mail or you want to start working and you get an extra kick of motivation. A little boost that you’ll get every single time you open a new tab in your browser. Just think about how many times you do this per day! 10? 20? 100? More? Imagine what an effect on your mood it would have if every time you do it, you get a little kick of motivation. Something little that makes you smile.

This “trick” might seem trivial, but if you commit to just a few days of doing it, you are going to feel the effect it has on your overall happiness. The homepage for most people is something work related – email, calendar, Google or the default page of your browser. Not only is that not helpful to your happiness, but it can make you unproductive as well when you get sucked into the email vortex every time you open a new tab.

Avoid all of that and give yourself some extra motivation by setting your homepage to something that inspires you.

Tip: if you are a Google Chrome user, check out this neat extension called Momentum. It changes your new tab to a stunning nature landscape picture, greets you by name, shows you the current time and it reminds you what your focus of the day is. It’s a great little add-on and it’s totally free of charge.

Over To You Now

That’s how you do it.

Start the day with three things that you’re grateful for, and then you send a thank-you note to a friend or someone who has a positive impact on your life. It will take you only a few minutes to do both of these and by the time you are done, you’re going to be so motivated, so inspired, that your morning is going to be so much better and your entire day is going to be so much more productive.

Don’t forget to set your browser’s homepage to something inspirational for that extra dose of motivation every time you open a new tab.

Repeat these every single morning and you’ll see how you are going to start waking up happy in no time. A happy person is a productive person!
